Our Sheep
Ewes
Our ewe flock is the backbone of everything we do here at Mulana. The high success and productivity of Mulana are closely tied to the health and performance of our ewes. Everything is built off fertility in a merino flock and our girls are leading the way.
Current lamb marking results show an impressive 130% lambs to ewes mated indicating the fertility and reproductive efficiency of the flock.
Additionally, the pregnancy scanning results are even more impressive, ranging between 150% and 160%. This means that a significant portion of the ewes are carrying multiple lambs, further boosting the overall lamb production potential of the flock. High pregnancy rates like these are crucial for maximising the productivity and profitability of a sheep operation. Our empty rate is consistently lower than 5%.
Our Mulana ewes are also achieving notable wool production with an average of 5-6kg of 18 micron wool per sheep annually. This indicates that not only are the ewes prolific breeders, but they also produce high-quality wool, which is another important aspect of the modern merino.
Rams
While we strive to continually improve our sheep using a multifaceted approach (both visual assessment, performance and ASBVs), some of our favourite ASBVS are outlined below:
Post-weaning weight (PWT)
Focussing on early growth rates increases turnover of wether lambs and thus profitability. It also results in improved reproduction for ewes, especially for ewe lambs.
Fat (YFAT)
Rams with good fat data have strong correlations with increased fertility as well as a good doing animal.
Muscle (YEMD)
Rams with good muscle data have strong correlations with greater resistance to worms, improved condition and increased fertility. It also helps to cap adult weight.
Worm resistance (YWEC)
Worm resistance is highly desirable for a productive flock and leads to ease of management as well as profitability.
Clean Fleece weight (YCFW)
A high clean fleece weight increases wool yield and thus profitability and has strong correlations to increased staple length.
Fibre Diametre (YFD)
A finer fibre diameter results in the wool being less susceptible to fleece rot and improves profitability.
