Your Visit to Our Open Day: What to Expect and How to Make the Most of It

Visiting a ram sale can feel a little daunting, but it’s one of the most valuable steps you can take for your sheep enterprise. At Mulana Poll Merino, our annual open day gives commercial sheep producers the chance to see our rams up close, compare them side by side, and ask questions that matter to your business.

If you’re planning to join us this year, here’s what you can expect—and a few tips to make sure you get the most out of the day.

What to Look for When Choosing a Ram

Your ram is half the genetics of your flock, so it’s worth taking the time to assess carefully. When inspecting a ram, start by looking for structural soundness—straight legs, good feet, and a strong frame that will stand the test of time. Then move to fleece quality. Our dual-purpose Merino sheep genetics are bred to produce both fine micron wool and strong carcass traits, so you’ll want to check the handle of the wool, consistency of micron, and evenness across the body.

Don’t be afraid to get hands-on—feel the fleece, check the staple length, and look at density. A well-grown, even fleece is a good sign of a ram that will breed high-yielding, easy-care sheep.

How to Assess a Ram’s Genetics and Suitability for Your Farm

Looking at the ram is important, but backing that up with hard data is even better. On our open day, every ram comes with figures that matter. A wide range of the most commonly used ASBVs will be displayed alongside a QR code linked to Sheep Genetics database for a comprehensive range of ASBVs, in case there is a trait you really want to hone in on. These data points give you confidence that you’re investing in reliable, data-driven breeding stock with predictable performance.

Think about what’s most important to your operation. Are you chasing faster lamb growth rates? Looking to improve fertility percentages? Wanting to boost wool income through finer microns? Matching your goals with the right ram’s data is the key to long-term results.

If you’re new to reading breeding values or need a hand comparing figures, don’t hesitate to ask—we’re more than happy to walk you through it.

Why Inspecting Rams in Person Matters

In an age where you can do plenty online, it’s tempting to skip the paddock inspection. But there’s no substitute for seeing rams in the flesh. Photos and numbers tell part of the story, but walking through the mob lets you see temperament, mobility, and overall quality with your own eyes.

Our open day is designed to give you the full picture—rams in their working condition, available to be inspected at your pace. It’s also a chance to meet us, ask questions, and hear about our sustainable sheep farming practices firsthand.

Making the Most of Your Visit

Bring along a notebook or your phone to jot down ram tag numbers that catch your eye. Make a list of key questions before you arrive, such as:

  • How will this ram’s genetics fit with my breeding goals?

  • What do his data points suggest about wool cut, fertility, or growth?

  • How has this bloodline performed in similar environments?

Most importantly, take your time. Choosing rams is about building the future of your flock, and seeing them in person is the best way to make confident, informed decisions.

Whether you’re an experienced buyer or visiting for the first time, our open day is a chance to learn, compare, and find the rams that will help you breed profitable, resilient sheep. We look forward to welcoming you to Mulana Poll Merino.
